Good Questions Deserve Good Answers.

What is Community Roots Society?

Community Roots Society is a federally registered nonprofit community garden located in the heart of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, nestled between Main Street and Kinburn Street. We offer seasonal bed rentals, a volunteer program, and communal growing space for anyone who wants to get their hands in the soil.

When is the growing season?

Our season runs from May 1 to October 31. Half-season rentals are available from July 1 for those who want to start mid-season.

What sizes of beds are available?

We offer four sizes:

4x4 - $75/season

4x8 - $125/season

4x12 - $175/season

4x16 - $225/season

What is included with my bed rental?

All beds include access to water throughout the season. The soil, the sunshine, and the satisfaction are yours to enjoy.

Are there any tools available?

We have a small selection of garden tools on site that are available for use. We can’t promise they’re in perfect shape but they’re there if you need them. We always recommend bringing your own if you have them.

What can I grow?

Almost anything! Vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit, if it grows in Nova Scotia, it’s welcome here. We encourage diversity and creativity in your plot.

Do I need experience to rent a bed?

Not at all. Beginners are warmly welcomed. Our volunteer Garden Stewards and fellow gardeners are always happy to share knowledge and encouragement.

Can I visit before renting?

Absolutely. We encourage it. Come walk the garden, meet the space, and find the bed that feels right. Reach out through our contact page to arrange a visit.

Do you offer discounted rates?

Yes. A limited number of beds are available at a community rate of 25% off for those who need it. Please reach out directly and discreetly, no paperwork, no judgment.

How do I reserve a bed?

You can reserve and pay for your bed directly through our website. Beds are confirmed upon payment and assigned on a first come first served basis.

Can I volunteer if I don’t want to rent a bed?

Absolutely! Volunteers are the backbone of Community Roots. Visit our Getting Involved page to find the right fit for you.

How can I support Community Roots without gardening or volunteering?

Donations of any size help us maintain the garden, build new beds, develop our greenhouse, and keep community rates accessible to those who need them. Every dollar stays local and goes directly into the ground.
